NC Fusion in the Pros: Weekly Recap August 19th

 In Blog

This week saw 16 former NC Fusion players across MLS and USL Championship in action for their clubs. Most notably were the three matchups where former NC Fusion players went head to head and a former Fusion player made a great save on a penalty in MLS. Here’s how some of our former academy and U-23 players playing professionally fared this week.

Clint Irwin (Colorado Rapids): 90 minutes vs Minnesota United, 90 minutes vs Houston Dynamo. Irwin played in goal in Colorado’s 1-0 loss to MNUFC. It may have been a 1-0 loss, but Irwin made a few fantastic saves, 8 in total, including a pk save (watch here, 1:00 mark) against the always dangerous Darwin Quintero. Despite the loss, Irwin did his part keeping the Rapids in the game, unfortunately, his team just couldn’t find the back of the net. Irwin also played in Colorado’s 2-2 draw with Houston on Saturday night. Irwin made 6 saves, had 1 punch clearance in the match.

Shea Salinas (San Jose Earthquakes): 14 minutes vs Sporting Kansas City. Salinas came on as a second half sub in San Jose’s 2-1 loss vs Fusion alum Gianluca Busio and SKC. In his short time, Salinas had a 100% pass accuracy by going 7 for 7 in passes and had one successful dribble in the match.

Gianluca Busio (Sporting KC): 59 minutes vs Orlando City, 16 minutes vs San Jose Earthquakes. Busio played the first 59 minutes of Sporting KC’s 1-0 loss in Orlando on Wednesday night. Despite the loss, Busio had a 87% pass accuracy and had 4 recoveries. This was the 4th loss in the last 5 for SKC. This poor run of form has them sitting 9 points outside of the last playoff spot in the west. Busio came on for the final 16 minutes of the match in Sporting’s 2-1 win vs Shea Salinas and San Jose.  After coming off the bench, Busio created 1 scoring chance in the final minutes of the match. SKC are 6 points outside of the playoffs after the win.

Luis Argudo (Columbus Crew): 23 minutes vs Toronto FC. Argudo came off the bench as a second half sub in Columbus’ 2-2 with TFC on Saturday night. Argudo came on and had a 92% pass accuracy. The Crew remain 7 points outside of the playoffs.

Jonathan Campbell (Seattle Sounders): 90 minutes vs Real Salt Lake. Campbell started and played the entire match in Seattle’s 3-0 loss to Salt Lake. Campbell had a 95% pass accuracy, completing 44 of his 46 attempted passes. The center back was also 2 for 2 in tackles and had 6 recoveries.
