NC Fusion in the Pros: Weekly Recap September 2nd

This week saw 12 former NC Fusion players across MLS and USL Championship in action for their clubs. Most notably were games where an NC Fusion alum got a game deciding assist in an MLS match with playoff implications. Here’s how some of our former academy and U-23 players playing professionally fared this week.


Luis Argudo (Columbus Crew): 88 minutes vs Chicago Fire. Argudo started the match and played a key role in Columbus’ 1-1 draw with Chicago. Argudo registered an assist (1:08 mark) in the 27th minute and also had a game high 3 dribbles.

Sebastian Ibeagha (New York City FC): 20 minutes vs Vancouver Whitecaps. Ibeagha came on as a second half substitute in NYC’s 3-1 victory in Vancouver on Saturday night. In his limited time on the field he had 1 accurate long ball and 1 recovery. The win helped New York City continue their surge up the eastern conference standings.

Sean Davis (New York Red Bulls): 90 minutes vs Colorado Rapids. Davis played the entire match in New York’s 2-0 loss to the Rapids on Saturday night. Despite the loss, Davis completed the most passes with 64, had the most tackles and won all 6 of his aerial duals.

Daniel Lovitz (Montreal Impact): 90 minutes vs Vancouver Whitecaps FC, 90 minutes vs DC United. Lovitz played the entire game in Montreal’s 2-1 win over Canadian rivals Vancouver on Wednesday night. He had 5 interceptions and had 2 tackles in the match. Lovitz also played 90 minutes in Montreal’s 3-0 loss to DC United on Saturday night. Despite the loss, Lovitz was able to create one scoring chance. Lovitz did receive a call up to the US national team to help brighten up his spirits after the loss to DC.

Brandt Bronico (Chicago Fire): 67 minutes vs Columbus Crew. Bronico started the game at defensive midfield for Chicago in their 1-1 draw with Columbus on Saturday night. Bronico had an 82% pass accuracy and 2 recoveries in the match.

USL Championship

Sam Fink (Saint Louis FC): 90 minutes vs Hartford Athletic. Fink played the entire match in Saint Louis’ 3-2 win over Hartford on Sunday night. Fink was the most fouled player in the game and had 6 clearances.

Brian Anunga (Charleston Battery): 90 minutes vs Charlotte Battery. Anunga played the entire match in Charleston’s 0-0 draw against another Carolina club on Friday night. Anunga was facing former Fusion U23 player, Alex Martinez in the match. Anunga had a game high, 13 recoveries and was fouled twice.

Alex Martinez (Charlotte Independence): 76 minutes vs Charleston Battery. Martinez started in Charlotte’s 0-0 draw with the Battery. He had an 87% pass accuracy and had 2 tackles.

Jon Bakero (Phoenix Rising FC): Jon Bakero- 17 minutes vs Tacoma Defiance, 90 minutes vs Colorado Springs Switchbacks. Bakero came off the bench in Phoenix Rising FC’s 4-2 win in Tacoma Tuesday night. Bakero came on when the score was 2-1 in favor of Tacoma. Then Bakero got an assist (1:51 mark) off a corner kick, tying the game at 2. This goal was the momentum switch in the match as Phoenix went on to score 2 more times in the final 10 minutes. Phoenix extended their win streak to 16, which is now the longest winning streak in American professional soccer history. Bakero also played the full 90 in Phoenix’s 3-0 over the Switchbacks. Bakero created the most chances in the game with 3 and won the most duels in the game with 7.

Jonathan Campbell (Tacoma Defiance): 90 minutes vs Phoenix Rising FC. Campbell played the entire match in Tacoma’s 4-2 loss on Tuesday night. He had 6 clearances and 6 recoveries in the match.

Shane Malcolm (Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC): 56 minutes vs Phoenix Rising. Malcolm started in Colorado Spring’s 3-0 loss to Phoenix on Saturday night. Malcolm had 2 crosses, 1 key pass and completed 100% of his passes in the game.

Jordan McCrary (Sacramento Republic FC): 90 minutes vs LA Galaxy II. McCrary played the entire match in Sacramento’s 1-0 loss in LA on Saturday night. McCrary had the most tackles in the match with 4.
